Many youth in small towns are ready to move away and do bigger and better things with their lives. This was no different for Dr. Shaun Roach as a young adult. He grew up in Ringgold all his life, and his plans were to move away and never look back on the town that molded him into the person he is today.
When Dr. Shaun was attending Ringgold High School, he didn’t know exactly what he wanted to do for a career. He did know that it wouldn’t be in Ringgold, or so he thought. After graduating from Ringgold in 2001, He decided to attend Dalton State College to give him time to decide what to do. During the summer of 2001, he began receiving chiropractic care from Dr. David Smith at North Georgia Chiropractic for back pain. After several visits, Dr. Shaun began seeing improvement not only in back pain, but also overall health. He states, “I used to get sick for a week every year. When I started receiving adjustments, my body started to feel so much better.” After many questions about chiropractic to Dr. Smith, Dr. Shaun decided that chiropractic was the path he was meant to pursue.
After one year at Dalton State College, Dr. Shaun decided it was time to move to Marietta and begin his undergraduate degree at Life University. He went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and a Doctor of Chiropractic Degree. After many months of deciding where to move to begin his chiropractic career, Dr. Shaun and his family decided to move back home to Ringgold. He began where it had all started for him a decade earlier. He joined Dr. Smith at North Georgia Chiropractic and never looked back. When asked, what made him want to move back, he stated, “It is a wonderful place to raise a family and a great location. I guess it is true, home is where the heart is.
How did I get into chiropractic care? Not all of my patients know my story, so I wanted to share why I chose to be a chiropractor. I can say that my experience with chiropractic healing was a very personal one and quite eye opening.
Background In Chiropractic
I started receiving chiropractic care after a football injury in high school. That injury led to multiple stays in the hospital, but with only temporary results. Although I didn’t know much about chiropractic, I decided to see a chiropractor to see if I could benefit from treatment. At that time chiropractic was probably a little more of an alternative treatment than it is today. However, anyone that has experienced intense back or joint pain can attest that alternatives are welcome if they work.
That’s exactly what happened in my case. My first adjustment gave me immediate relief. I was amazed. My own personal experience and positive results through the healing of chiropractic care led me to my career and personal calling to serve others in the healthcare industry.
My Calling to Chiropractic
I truly feel blessed to be a part of the Ringgold, GA community serving as a chiropractor. On my desk I have what I call “My Call to Chiropractic,” which reminds me of my mission. It states, “It wasn’t a dramatic voice of God, but more of a compulsion, a deep desire to serve people — even minister to people — through the healing art of Chiropractic.” This calling was an intense feeling that this is what I have to do with my life. For me, it’s like an artist who has to paint or a musician that has to play music. I have a calling to adjust spines and help others find pain relief and optimal spine and joint (and over-all body) health through chiropractic.
Whatever your mission in life is, I hope you also will have the privilege as I have had, to follow your dreams and make a difference in the lives of others.
Many people deal with nagging, low back problems. But how do you know if it is a pulled muscle, or possibly something more? One common source of low back pain is the Sciatic Nerve. The simplest symptom of Sciatic Nerve involvement is low back pain that is associated with pain down the back of the leg.
Sciatic Nerve Background
To further evaluate a sciatic nerve involvement, we have to understand the anatomy of this nerve. The sciatic nerve is the widest and longest running nerve in the human body. It begins from the lumbar and sacral nerves L4-S3. These spinal nerves originate from the spinal cord in the low back and the sacrum. Sciatica is a term used when there is pain caused by the irritation of the nerves in the low back often times producing numbness and tingling down the legs.
Common causes of Sciatica include Disc Herniation, also known as a slipped disc, Degenerative Disc Disease, Spinal Stenosis, Spondylolisthesis and Piriformis Syndrome. Back pain relief can often be helped with chiropractic care. A chiropractor is trained to locate and establish the cause of these low back issues. By seeking chiropractic care first, you are decreasing the chances of having back surgery. Chiropractic care is an important alternate option to back surgery.
North Georgia Chiropractic celebrated their 14th year in practice recently. The event was marked by a patient appreciation day, to give back to the community that helped make it possible. The day included live music, refreshments, chair massages and much more. North Georgia Chiropractic is located in downtown Ringgold, GA and has proudly been serving the community and surrounding areas since 2000. The practice not only cares for local citizens, but reaches Northwest Georgia cities including: Dalton, Tunnel Hill and Fort Oglethorpe, just to name a few. North Georgia Chiropractic also sees many patients from Chattanooga, TN area.
Many people have asked how North Georgia Chiropractic began. Dr. David Smith’s journey started his junior year of high school with an injury he received while playing football. He took multiple trips to the hospital and was taking medication with no relief. The pain continued for more than 5 years until he sought chiropractic care. With his first adjustment, he felt the immediate relief he had been longing for, for many years. He continued chiropractic care throughout college, and he eventually decided that chiropractic was the future for him.
Dr. Smith attended Parker University in Dallas, TX to receive his chiropractic degree. After graduating, He decided he and his wife wanted to move back to the Chattanooga area and start a chiropractic practice. After careful thought and prayer, he decided to move to Ringgold, Georgia, a short drive from Chattanooga, Tennessee.
When North Georgia Chiropractic opened their doors in 2000, it was the only chiropractic office in Ringgold. Since North Georgia Chiropractic has been open, Dr. Smith has had the privilege of seeing smiles put on patient’s faces after treatment, when they have relief of pain, the same way he did. His driving force everyday he steps into the office is to use natural care to produce excellent results.
